At the "Battle of the Sexes" roller derby bout between the Carolina Rollergirls and Collision Men's Derby on September 12, 2015, the ladies kept pace, but unfortunately, as usual, the men finished first.

Holy Defense

At the Battle of the Sexes roller derby bout between the Carolina Rollergirls and Collision Men's Derby, the men were finally able to find a hole in the girls' defense.

Shafted

A "Battle of the Sexes" roller derby bout at Dorton Arena on Sep-tember 12, 2015, provided much inspiration for Clever Sign Chick.

Make the Men

Billed as the "Battle of the Sexes," a bout between the Carolina Rollergirls and Collision Men's Derby occurred on September 12, 2015 at Dorton Arena. The ladies did make the men go down, but ultimately the men scored more.

Bad Aim

On Saturday, Sep-tember 12, 2015 the Carolina Rollergirls played Collision Men's Derby at Dorton Arena in Raleigh. This "Battle of the Sexes" inspired several sign ideas. Alas, the boys won, even with their bad aim. :(

NEO Natzo

Made this during one of the intermissions at the Carolina Rollergirls bout on February 22, 2014 against the NEO (Northeast Ohio) Roller Derby of Akron-Canton, Ohio. This was the last derby bout at Dorton Arena, at least for a while.

Conquer the Fear

Made this sign for the bout between the Carolina Rollergirls All-Stars (Raleigh) vs. Cape Fear Roller Girls All-Stars (Wilmington). CRG won. Sad to see a lot of skaters retire after this game.

Eris Discordia

Introduced at the September 3, 2011, bout between the Carolina Rollergirls All-Stars and the Dirty South Derby Girls from Atlanta, this sign honors CRG player Eris Discordia, who is small but determined and effective. Y'all know I like small athletes.

For those who don't know, "We''ll aways have Paris" is a line from the film Casablanca and is #43 on the American Film Institute list of all-time top quotes from American movies.

Kitty Got Claws

Found this in the archives. Guess I forgot to post it earlier. Kitty Crowbar (aka Jesse King) skates for the Carolina Rollergirls. More importantly, so does her ass.

DC Marvel

Made this sign for the Carolina Rollergirls vs. DC All-Stars roller derby bout on February 19, 2011. I suppose I could use it at the next Hurricanes v. Crapitals game. Do you think there will be enough geeks in a hockey arena to get this? I mean, they did unveil the Guardian Project a couple weeks ago.

Pull the Plug on DC

Made this sign for the Carolina Rollergirls vs. DC All-Stars game on February 19, 2011. I am contemplating its appropriateness for Crapitals hockey games as well. What do you think?

Slow Derby

The current Women's Flat Track Derby Association rules allow skaters to stop, backskate, and/or skate in the reverse direction. Jammers (the ones who score points by passing opponents) can step outside the track and go back to reenter behind the rest of the back so that they may try again to pass without committing a penalty and therefore earn points or the "lead jammer" designation that they would have lost on the first attempt. All this makes for (1) confused fans (2) confused refs (3) confused stat-keepers, and (4) ssssssslow skating.

In my opinion, and that of many other fans, this is not what roller derby should be. You wouldn't get this kind of nonsense on the banked tracks. My sign isn't very clever - I made it quickly during halftime on the back of another one - but there is something to be said for simplicity and for putting into writing what everybody at the bout was thinking.

The WFTDA should simplify the rules so that normal folks can follow the play. Derby should be fast and hard-hitting. If they want it to be slow and tame, they should go and play a pleasant game of croquet on top of Ann Calvello's grave.
